Would You Wear Just One Earring?

It might just be chicest to go it alone...

I'll admit, I was apprehensive. When I spotted the first fashion girl wearing the Mise en Dior earring during Fashion Week last February, I balked. Notice I said earring, not earrings. Raf Simons, the purveyor of chic that he is, sent models down the Christian Dior Fall 2013 runway adorned with only one earring, and this usually-just-for-runway-styling feat has taken a liking to the fashion pack. Myself included.

The first time I tried to wear a single earring, I panicked and instead mis-matched my newly-purchased Dior pearl earrings with a diamond stud to achieve balance. My fellow editor noticed my fear and encouraged me to go for it. The next time I braved it alone, but not without a purposeful sweep of hair over my empty ear. Several people at the office and at after-work drinks commented on my look. "I think you've lost an earring," they all said. And my only response was 'this is how people are wearing it now'. Which I guess is a true defense of any burgeoning fashion trend. Now this look isn't just reserved for said pearl. I have seen New York girls out on the town wearing a single gold ear cuff or a shoulder-length chandelier with their leather pants and cocktail dresses, respectively. Stylish jewelers Gaia Repossi and Delfina Delletrez are both go-tos for the single earring purchase, with the Repossi gold Berbere collection and Delletrez's whimsical eye and lip designs perfect for a singular statement. I have yet to brave a single earring of substantial length though, sticking safely to my oversize pearl stud. But the holidays are the perfect time of year to test my limits with ornamentation in a bigger way—my favorite Eddie Borgo tassel earrings might look cooler if I go with just one.
