National Pink Day (June 23rd)

National Pink Day (June 23rd) National Pink Day, not to be confused with International Pink Day, is a holiday which is celebrated annually on June 23rd in observance of the color pink. It is the perfect day for both men and women to put on their best pink colored clothing and paint the town red. After all, pink is a color that is not only celebrated today but is also a color that has traditionally been historically significant. History of National Pink Day Although no one really knows the history of National Pink Day, what is known is the history of the color pink. While the color pink has been found on parts of the human body and all throughout nature, the name “pink” is believed to go back to the 14th century. It was the name of “pinking” shears that were used to cut around the edges of fabric. Later, in the 17th century in the Netherlands, a Dutch flower of this color was given the name “pinken.” Eventually, the color and the name ‘pink” began to become synonymous in English. Pink is a color that is usually associated with females but that wasn’t always the case. Around the turn of the 20th century, in Europe, male infants were dressed in pink and female infants were dressed in blue. That’s because pink was considered to be a stronger color than blue and therefore, more masculine. Blue was seen as delicate and dainty and therefore, more suited to females. Today, the color pink is seen as a more feminine color – although more and more men are incorporating the color into their wardrobes. It is also a color that is associated with happiness, children, and lightheartedness. Many people also believe that it is a color that conveys compassion and care. National Pink Day Customs & Celebrations National Pink Day can be celebrated in numerous ways. You can dress up in pink clothing or accent your clothing with pink. You can use pink food dye to color your food, wear a pink carnation or watch the movie “Pretty In Pink.” Or you can just listen to music by the pop-star Pink or the prog-rock band Pink Floyd. Any way you want to celebrate the holiday is perfectly acceptable.
